Board: Sabattus Board of Selectmen

Met: Tuesday night

School business

Issue: Incoming Superintendent Jim Hodgkin met the board. He’ll take the helm of new Regional School Unit 4 on July 1.

Issue: Principal Beverly Coursey had approached selectmen asking for community service projects her eighth-graders might undertake.

The scoop: Selectmen suggested work at Martin Point, the fire station or the monument downtown.

Up next: In the fall, students will pick one, draw up a budget and come in front of selectmen with a pitch.

July 4th

Issue: A resident asked last year if flags could go up around town for the Fourth of July; that request came up again this week.

The scoop: The town doesn’t own pole-hanging flags, so the request was denied.

Up next: The fire chief told selectmen he’ll work on having flags up for July 2010.

Issue: Since the holiday is on a Saturday, the transfer station will be closed that day.

Selectmen actions

Issue: Matthew Prince was appointed to the position of police lieutenant.

Issue: Selectmen reviewed photos that showed the high-water level at Sleeper Dam and agreed to have the town manager draft a letter to the Sabattus Lake Dam Commission expressing the board’s “displeasure” at the water height.

Issue: On July 27 at 6 p.m., the board will meet to set the tax rate for the next year. Tax bills go out in August.
