TOWNSHIP 31, Maine (AP) — Police say a moose was killed but no students were hurt when the gangly creature ran into a school bus carrying a high school baseball team in eastern Maine.

The bus carrying the Sheadd High School baseball team struck and killed a cow moose shortly before midnight Tuesday on Route 9 in Township 31. The team was returning to Eastport after playing a high school playoff game in Bangor.

Police told the Bangor Daily News that the moose ran into the side of the bus, striking its head on the windshield.

Wildlife officials say moose are active this time of year and are sometimes driven out of the woods by bugs.
