TURNER – The Turner Natural History Club and Museum met May 30 at the clubhouse with President Maxine Hinkley presiding.

It was announced Joel Ellis and Bill Whitman installed the newly painted double-sided sign by the road. Whitman suggested that a note of appreciation be sent to Mike Spugnardi of Spugnardi Signs for repainting the sign. Edith Ellis will donate plants for the base of the sign. On the sign is the new road number – 442.

Hinkley also reported the club has an e-mail address, [email protected], for those wishing to contact the museum electronically. Those wishing may call Hinkley at 225-3384.

It was also decided to file the papers to change the name of the organization to the Turner Natural History Club and Museum, as plans are afoot to open a day or two a month to the public.

Dr. Paula Work and several of her colleagues from the Maine State Museum visited in May. Work has a PhD in museum preservation and is doing a survey of small natural history museums in Maine. The team spent about five hours cataloging and photographing aspects of the collections as well as giving advice on caring for the artifacts.

Two of the crew were ornithologists who spent their time photographing and identifying the bird collection. Work had many recommendations and will give further advice on care of the collections.

Work will attend the 7 p.m. meeting Thursday, June 25, at the museum in Turner Center. She will make recommendations on the disposition of the many collections, as well as speak about natural history preservation.

The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.

Whitman was reappointed chairman of the Program Committee and will present a proposed slate of programs for the rest of the year at the June meeting.

So far the schedule is as follows: June 25, Dr. Work.

July 4, open house at the museum following the parade. Guided tours will be given and refreshments will be served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

July 30, Bob DeChesne, recent publisher of the Maine birding trail pamphlet, will speak on the Maine birding trail. a list of 82 places to bird watch in Maine.

Aug. 23, annual flower show and photography contest. Anyone may enter either or both, and children are especially encouraged to enter. E-mail [email protected] for contest rules and categories.
