DURHAM – A massive mound of dirt at a Route 136 construction site succumbed to the long, wet spring by heaving a load of mud into the roadway Friday.

The 5:30 p.m. mudslide temporarily stalled traffic as piles of mud, logs and sticks oozed over the southbound lane.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s officials went to the site to help control Friday afternoon commuter traffic as motorists attempted to navigate their way around the heap of mud.

The mud originated with a hill of dirt being used in the construction of a new elementary school near the Route 9 intersection.

A crew from Dearborn Construction was sent to the scene. A pair of workers used a Bobcat and a front-end loader to clear the muck from the roadway.
