WAYNE – Maine wardens continued their investigation Saturday to determine if speed was a factor in a boating accident in Androscoggin Lake late Friday night.
Five people where aboard the boat when it went aground in fog on the rock outcropping of an unnamed island at about 11:15 p.m. on the west shore of the lake in Wayne, according to Maine Warden Service spokeswoman Deborah Turcotte.
Androscoggin Lake straddles Androscoggin and Kennebec counties between Wayne and Leeds.
The operator of the boat was Bradley Birney, 38, of North Turner. Neither he nor passenger Eric Donnell, 21, of Hartford, were injured, Turcotte said,
Passengers Christina Dudley, 36, and Elizsa Webster, 23, both of Turner, suffered cuts and bruises and were taken by ambulance to an area hospital where they were treated and released, Turcotte said.
The fourth passenger, Jason Cyr, 43, of Turner, was concerned about a wrist injury and drove himself to a hospital, Turcotte said. Leeds Fire and Rescue responded and tended to the injured.
Turcotte said Birney, an experienced boater, was trying to return his passengers to shore in poor visibility when the accident occurred. It was reported at 11:18 p.m.
Damage to the 1983 Bayliner with an inboard motor was not yet known. Turcotte said the boat was still aground on the rocks as of Saturday morning.
