At this time of year, the Sun Journal is naturally filled with stories celebrating the accomplishments of the area’s outstanding high school seniors. As a coach and parent of two teenagers, I pay particular attention to pieces about local student-athletes who excel.
Kalle Oakes, Justin Pelletier, and the rest of the sports staff do a great job covering high school athletics, I just wish that they would include the college destination of the students they write about. They typically omit this information. I believe that successful admission to college is as newsworthy as their state record-breaking statistics.
The victory of college education, and the positive aspiration its achievement provides young, Maine student-athletes that read about it, will benefit these fabulous seniors and their communities, long after their records have been broken.
