AUBURN – Gregory St. Denis, the son of Kelly and Gerry St. Denis, was named the eighth recipient of the Larry Marczak Memorial Scholarship at Edward Little High School on May 21. Virginia Marczak presented St. Denis with a $2,000 check.

A graduate of the class of 2009, St. Denis will attend the University of New England in Biddeford, majoring in occupational therapy.

Applicants were asked to provide a list of activities and achievements as well as recommendation letters. They were also asked to write an essay explaining how they had made a difference in someone’s life or in the community during their high school years.

St. Denis wrote about experiences during his two years as a Big Brother. Michelle McClellan, principal of Walton School, said St. Denis has “a respectful and engaging manner” and that his “Little” often stopped by her office to express how much he was looking forward to St. Denis’s weekly arrival.

St. Denis was the goalie on the Edward Little ice hockey team and enjoyed running cross country, receiving the Coach’s Award in 2008. His name has been added to a plaque engraved with the names of past scholarship recipients, which hangs in the high school memorial case.

The scholarship was established to honor Marczak’s 33-year commitment to education. The scholarship board consists of teachers who worked with Marczak, as well as members of the family.

Applicants should be graduating seniors from Edward Little and pursuing a post-secondary degree. The scholarship is intended to be given annually and is supported by private donations.
