RANGELEY – The Rangeley Friends of the Arts production of the Tony Award-winning “Crazy For You,” featuring lyrics by Ira Gershwin and music by George Gershwin, will be presented July 4-7 at Lakeside Theater.
While the show may not be familiar to many, the music is well known: “Shall We Dance,” “I’ve Got Rhythm,” “Bidin’ My Time,” “Embraceable You” and “Tonight’s The Night.”
The original Broadway production opened Feb. 19, 1992, and closed Jan. 7, 1996, running for a total of 1,622 performances. The show is the 33rd longest-running Broadway musical in musical theater history.
In “Crazy For You,” a stage-struck New York playboy, Bobby Child, is sent to a small, poor town in Nevada to close down the local theater. When he arrives in Deadrock, it is clear that the coal-mining town has seen better days – with the men, who are cowboys, sing “Bidin’ My Time” in a long, slow drawl.
Everett Baker receives a letter from New York warning of the bank foreclosing on the Gaiety Theater. The only woman left in the forlorn town is Everett’s daughter, the spunky Polly Baker, who vows to get even with Child if she ever meets him. Upon his arrival, Child sees and immediately falls in love with Polly, not realizing who she is.
If he forecloses on the theater, he will lose the girl of his dreams. Inspired, he comes up with the idea of putting on a show to pay off the mortgage. Polly agrees to this plan until she finds out who he is. Child is heartbroken, but he decides to put on the show anyway, disguised as Zangler.
A few days later, 10 Follies Girls on vacation from The Zangler Follies show up to help Child stage a spectacular show. When the men of Deadrock see the girls, the sleepy town becomes quite lively.
“Crazy For You” will be presented at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce; call 864-5364. Lakeside Theater is on Main Street.
