LEWISTON – D.J. Whittemore scored the go-ahead run on Evan Humphrey’s fielder’s choice in the eight inning, and catcher Matt Verrier topped off Bessey Motors’ finale with a one-run triple to give Bessey (2-0) a 4-2 victory over Gayton (2-1) in an American Legion baseball game Thursday.
Bessey Motors held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning when Gayton tied it up. Gayton outhit Bessey, 8-4, but couldn’t together a comeback in the eighth inning.
For Gayton, pitcher Alex Wong and Scott Ouellette each doubled. Ouellette had two hits. Kyle Nagel and Ben Wigant also had two hits apiece. Bessey’s Jake Fillabrown got the win on the mound and he also doubled.
