BIDDEFORD (AP) – Two brothers were shot and killed early Tuesday on downtown Biddeford street and a former mayoral candidate was charged with two counts of murder, authorities said.
The shootings took place at about 1 a.m. near the home of Rory Holland, 55, who surrendered to a York County SWAT team after a five-hour standoff. Holland ran for mayor of Biddeford in 2000.
Brothers Gage Greene, 19, and Derek Greene, 21, died at Southern Maine Medical Center.
Holland, who was being held at the York County Jail, will likely make his first court appearance Wednesday.
Biddeford police said they responded to calls from neighbors about gunshots and arrived to find the brothers wounded along South Street.
Investigators had no immediate word on what might have triggered the shootings but said Holland and the two brothers knew each other.
According to the Portland Press Herald, Holland’s criminal record includes a two-year prison term in Kansas in the late 1970s for attempted murder, aggravated assault and simple battery on his 16-month-old daughter. He also was convicted in 1991 of assault in Portland.
Charges that he kidnapped a young woman and her baby were dropped and he was acquitted of assaulting and terrorizing tenants.
