DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Police
Department has received a number of complaints about loud noise and
erratic operations from all-terrain vehicles traveling village
streets.

Sgt. Jeff Howe said most offenders are
not members of the local ATV club. He said nonmembers often drive
recklessly and too fast. Although most town streets allow travel by
ATVs, such use is only for accessing the ATV trail or to get fuel or
food from an area business.

“It’s the irresponsible riders that are making it worse
for everyone,” Howe said.

Loud and reckless riders most often
appear on Coburn Avenue, he said. The speed limit on town streets
is 10 mph.

Driving an unregistered ATV
calls for a minimum $200 fine, and speeding could
become a criminal offense, he said.

In other police department news, a 2004 Chevrolet SUV driven by Donna
White, 21, of Canton, collided with a deer at 7:13 p.m. July 2 on Route 142. The deer was killed. The SUV sustained $5,000 damage.
