WINTHROP – It was the tight rematch both teams expected Wednesday night in Winthrop as the Red Sox hosted the Central Maine Green Wave of Oakland in Pine Tree League baseball.
Following a 3-1 loss to the Wave (8-1) earlier in the season, Winthrop (8-1) came out on top in a pitchers’ duel, 1-0, in nine innings. The Red Sox’ Torey Carr and Green Wave;s Kevin Main battled pitch-for-pitch in a scheduled seven-inning game. Carr went the distance for the win, giving up seven hits. Joel Fernald and Rick Doble had 2 hits apiece for Oakland.
Carr struck out four and walked nobody. He was backed by a solid defense, with two double plays preventing any type of rally by the Wave. His counterpart Main was just as effective in not allowing a runner to reach second base in his eight innings of work while giving up two hits and striking out 10.
Doble came on in the ninth in relief of Main, recording two quick outs befoere Bob Cochran lined the first pitch he saw over the outstretched glove of shortstop Kris Targett for a base hit. Cochran stole second base on the next pitch and went to third as the ball squirted into the outfield. He then scored the game-winner when Eric Palleschi reached first base on an infield error.
Matt McCarthy and Palleschi had other two hits on the night for the Sox.
