JAY — Police are investigating an accident that claimed the life of a local man late Sunday.

Peter Benoit, 56, was a passenger in a car driven by his wife, Barbara Benoit, that crashed on Route 133 near the Beedy Road intersection, according to a release issued by Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr.

When Jay police Sgt. Troy R. Young Sr. responded to a report of a crash
at 10:42 p.m. Sunday on Route 133, he found skid marks and debris
littering the roadway, but the vehicle had left the scene, White said.

A NorthStar Emergency Medical Services ambulance was called to the Benoits’ residence on Davis Road for a person who had been involved in an auto accident,White said.

Upon arriving at the home, the ambulance crew determined Peter Benoit was dead, White said. Benoit was in the front passenger seat of the 2008 Subaru Outback owned by Barbara Benoit, 50, White said.

A blood-alcohol test was collected as standard procedure involving fatal accidents, White said. The Maine Medical Examiner’s Office was notified as well as the district attorney’s office.

The vehicle, a total loss, was towed from the residence and impounded by police, White said. A Maine State Police trooper was called in to reconstruct the accident, which remained under investigation Monday.

The Benoits opened Peter’s Seafood & Steak on Route 4 in the Farmington section of Fairbanks earlier this year.
