Rita (Hemond) Bertram

FARMINGTON, Conn. – Rita (Hemond) Bertram, 87, of Avon, Conn., and Key Largo, Fla., beloved wife and partner for 23 years to Joseph H. Bertram, died Saturday, July 18, at John Dempsey Hospital, Farmington, Conn.

Born in Lewiston, daughter of the late Roseanne (Plante) Hemond and Alphonse Hemond, she was raised in Lewiston and graduated from Ave Maria School in Sabattus and Mechanic Falls High School in Mechanic Falls. She also graduated from Acme Business College, Lewiston. Rita was employed since 1959, by the Bertram Co., Bloomfield, Conn., as an administrative assistant and finally treasurer until the company was sold in 1995.

She enjoyed golf and held memberships in both Wampanoag Country Club, West Hartford, Conn., and Card Sound Country Club in Key Largo, Fla. She also loved to fish the Atlantic Ocean with her husband, Joe, off Key Largo, Fla. An avid needlepoint artist, she had made over 400 items which she either gave to family or sent as gifts. Rita was an outgoing and caring person, especially to her husband, Joe, whom friends and relatives said was a delight to be with.

Besides her husband; she leaves a daughter, Irene Piegza and her husband, Gerald, of Chicopee, Mass.; a grandson, Scott Sonnone of Ashville, N.C.; two brothers, Andy Hemond and his wife, Anne, of Falmouth, Mass., and John Hemond and his wife, Priscilla, of Minot; and two sisters, Irene Patry of Bangor and Theresa Patry of Minot. She also leaves Joe’s children, Dennis Bertram, his wife, Diane, and
their daughter Olivia, Jane Bally, her husband, Dion, and their
children, Paul and Elizabeth and Ruth Burke, her husband, Jarrod, and
their children Tabitha and Shelby.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Matti Ojala; and two brothers, George and Roland Hemond.
