NAPLES — A patrol sergeant was injured Monday afternoon after a traffic accident on Route 302.

Sgt. Paul Thorpe of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s office was driving an unmarked Ford cruiser west on the highway at around 1:35 p.m. when he collided with a Ford sedan driven by Lawrence McHugh of Maryland. McHugh was pulling out of Tony’s Food Land and Shopping Plaza, and his vehicle was struck on the driver’s-side door. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.

Both men were taken to Bridgton Hospital after Thorpe complained of chest and ankle pain and McHugh complained of neck and chest pain. The injuries were not life-threatening.

Thorpe was not responding to a call when the accident took place. Eastbound traffic on Route 302 was detoured for about an hour after the accident.

The accident is under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstruction team. The early determination states that McHugh did not see Thorpe’s cruiser because a third vehicle blocked his view as he pulled into traffic.
