Eleven students from various states are learning how to make paddles before using their craft on a canoe trip along the coast of Maine. Above, Chris Knapp of Koviashuvik Local Living School in Temple, who leads student expeditions for Kroka Expeditions out of Marlow, N.H., shows Conor Leary of Pennsylvania (standing) how to shave the bluntly cut wood into paddles at a farm on Owen Mann Road in Farmington on Tuesday. On a 14-day expedition, the group will spend three days at the school making paddles, then will travel to Blue Hill Bay to tour the smaller islands in large wooden canoes built by Kroka’s full-time students, Knapp said. The students sit on hand-built shave horses and hold the paddles tight, using wooden clamps held by their feet while they shave the wood.
