I applaud Jim Bennett’s passion, commitment and intelligence as one of the most brilliant city administrators Lewiston will ever have.

I met him in the 1970s in Lisbon; he was an engaging individual, so committed and aware of local and state politics and business. I was impressed with his knowledge, involvement and love of community. His sureness shone from the gleam in his eyes with every conversation. I knew he was destined to do great things, wherever his road would take him.

When he became administrator, I breathed a sigh of relief after the two slithering snakes of this city’s past. It was refreshing to see Lewiston become a model All-America City because of Jim. I watch the city’s business on TV on Tuesdays — what a comedy show it has become. Councilors and a mayor with egos going full throttle.

Representation of constituents is no longer their purpose — probably never was. They have their agenda for the new political futures that have already reared attempts and lost in the recent past. Arrogant they may be, it is sad to see the city’s business being diverted to the “Good Ole Boys” business of the past.

There are a select group of individuals who have their minds set on managing and policing the city as though the hired staff is inept or incapable. It was just a matter of time before the idiot test would reveal itself. Now Lewiston has lost a great person and dedicated city administrator.

That’s sadder than sad.

Nick Knowlton Sr., Lewiston
