LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library is offering a special series of computer instruction sessions for older adults this summer.

The free one-on-one tutorials are scheduled to take place from 1 to 3 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 12 in the library’s computer lab. The sessions are designed to assist anyone age 55 or over with learning the basics of using the Internet or to receive help with word processing or other entry-level computer functions.

The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with people invited to drop in at any time during the two-hour sessions and to attend as many of them as they like. No advance registration is required.

Staffing the sessions is a team of young volunteers from the Lewiston-Auburn area, including Deanna Morency, a student at Edward Little High School; Anna Snook, who attends Cheverus High School: and Kevin Costello, Bruce Soper, Laura St. Pierre and Stephanie Costello, all students at St. Dominic Regional High School. Supervising the group is Cathy Snook, who founded the program at LPL three summers ago.

LPL Reference Librarian Ellen Gilliam said, “We are very pleased to be able to host the senior computer lab sessions again this summer. It’s gratifying to see how the teens and seniors work together to teach each other; the seniors benefiting from the technical knowledge and youthful enthusiasm of the kids and the kids benefiting from understanding the issues and learning styles of older adults while logging needed community service hours.”

Topics covered include basic computer use as well online functions such as how to write and send e-mail, how to use Google and other search engines, navigating on the Web, selling on eBay and how to use chat rooms and blogs.
