OTISFIELD — Residents will have a chance to better know what their neighbors can do Saturday at a premiere networking event.

The Neighborhood Networking Day will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Otisfield Community Hall. There is no charge to display a service, and refreshments will also be available.

“It’s kind of like a business showcase, but on a local level,” said Town Clerk Sharon Matthews.

Matthews said she talked with the Board of Selectmen about holding the event after finding during the course of transactions with customers that residents were able to provide a variety of services. She said they range from contracting to computer services to artisan work.

Matthews said the goal of the event is to make people aware of services available in Otisfield so they don’t have to travel out of town looking for them.

She said people who come to the town seasonally may also be interested in local services, and that a directory of services may eventually be posted on the town’s Web site.

“In these times, with the economic slowdown, we’re trying to hopefully keep our community employed in whatever manner we can,” said Matthews. “There’s so many people that are talented that come in here.”

Matthews said 19 people have signed up for the event, including a daycare owner in Oxford who takes care of two children from Otisfield.

Matthews said she would like to keep the event at a grassroots level instead of creating a larger event like the business showcase put on annually by the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce.
