LEWISTON —Would-be candidates for city offices still have several weeks to get their names on the Nov. 3 ballot.

City Clerk Kathy Montejo said Wednesday that three candidates had completed the signature-gathering process necessary to secure a spot on the ballot.

They are John Butler of 20 Ware St., seeking the Ward 1 City Council seat; Doreen Crist of 16 Wellman St., seeking the Ward 2 City Council seat; and Jim Handy of 9 Maplewood Road, seeking re-election to the Ward 4 School Committee seat.

Many others have signaled their intention to run for City Council. In all, 17 candidates are passing petitions for the seven open spots.

Four candidates are passing petitions to run for mayor. They are incumbent Larry Gilbert, Mark Paradis of 82 Prospect Ave., Michael Dumas of 7 Irene St. and Nick Knowlton of 21 Brooks Ave.

Candidates are much more sparse for seats on the Lewiston School Committee. So far, only four candidates have taken out paperwork for eight open seats. No candidate has taken out papers for School Committee seats in Wards 1, 2, 3 and 5.

But they have almost a month left, Montejo said. “I’m not worried at all.”

In all, 16 seats are open in November’s election — seven city councilors, eight School Committee members and mayor.

Candidates have until Sept. 4 to collect signatures. Candidates for the mayor’s job must collect signatures from 100 registered city voters. All other candidates must collect 50 signatures from registered Lewiston voters. For all City Council and School Committee ward seats, the signatures must come from residents of the candidate’s ward.

All candidates must be at least 20 years old, must be registered voters of Lewiston and qualified to vote in their wards before June 4. All positions are for two years beginning Jan. 5, 2010.

Questions about the procedures for nomination papers or the municipal election process should be directed to the clerk’s office at 513-3124.
