AUBURN — Mechanics Savings Bank recently awarded a $1,000 Banking on the Future Scholarship to Monmouth Academy graduate Garrison L. Beck. He is the son of Douglas and Jodi Beck of North Monmouth.

Beck was the 2009 class valedictorian and served as president of the National Honor Society and class president for four years. He was a member of the yearbook staff, the Academic Decathlon Team, and the varsity baseball team. In addition, he served as captain of the varsity football team for two years.

Beck was honored with the 2009 Maine Principal’s Association Principal’s Award, the 2009 Kiwanis Club Distinguished Youth Award, the 2009 Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award and the 2005 Office of the Secretary of State Citizenship Award.

Beck has served as a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Food Bank, the Monmouth Community FRIENDS Team and the Southern Kennebec County Underage/High Risk Drinking Work Group.

This fall, Beck will attend Colby College to major in environmental studies. He plans to pursue a career in the area of business sustainability practices.

For more than twenty years, Mechanics Savings Bank has provided scholarships to assist high school graduates with their higher education goals. With a focus on demonstrated community service, the Banking on the Future Scholarship program awarded $1,000 to seventeen high school graduates at nine area high schools this year.
