LEWISTON — Lewiston High School rising senior Matthew Beauparlant recently attended the 2009 Congressional Academy 13-day scholars program in Washington, D.C., that focused on civic leadership and civil rights.

Beauparlant was one of 102 students, two from each state and the District of Columbia, chosen for the academy, which ran from June 28 to July 10. The program entailed intensive study of three historical texts: the Declaration of Independence , the Gettysburg Address and the Martin Luther King Jr. speech, “I Have a Dream.” The writings were viewed through their historical relevance and how they affect contemporary society . Historical sites in Washington, Philadelphia and Gettysburg were  toured during day trips.

Sponsored by the Political Science Department of Ashland (Ohio) University, students who successfully completed the course will receive three undergraduate collage credits. The U.S. Department of Education paid for students’ hotel, meals and tour expenses.

Beauparlant, son of Paul and Marilyn Beauparlant, is a member of his school’s mock trial team and the National Honor Society. He is also a member of Lewiston’s varsity soccer and basketball teams.
