I read with interest the letter from Rep. Thom Watson, D-Bath, printed Aug. 6.
Here are some “facts” I know to be in the legislation as it stands now.
All labor charges on car repairs, which will not affect Maine tourists to any significant degree, will be taxed at 5 percent. That will hit the wallet of all Maine citizens who try to properly maintain their vehicles. That is added to the recently enacted $1 premium on every gallon of bulk oil that your neighborhood garage is now paying that the Democrats enacted. They can call it a fee or premium, but it is a tax.
That results in a “fee” of several hundred dollars every time we fill our bulk oil tank at our place of business. That is passed on to the customer.
Tax will be added to many items people already buy that are not taxed at this time.
I encourage everyone to check out the “facts” of this new legislation. Maine does, indeed, need tax reform, but the present bill is not in the best interest of many Maine citizens.
Interestingly enough, skiing and golfing are exempt from the proposed tax reform, but going to the movies, a concert or recreation park will be taxed. I guess that only those who can afford to golf or ski need this exemption.
I will be signing and circulating the repeal effort petition. Our representatives in Augusta can do better than the proposed bill.
