OXFORD — It sure wasn’t easy, but he made it look that way after a minor setback.
Defending champion Skip Tripp survived a spinout at lap 48, regained the lead at lap 50 and pulled away to win the Time Warner Cable 100 for the Strictly Stock division Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Tripp, of Poland, tied the all-time record for wins (18) in this division, shared with Kim Tripp and Shane Green. The victory was his sixth of 2009 and pads his point lead as he goes for another coveted championship.
Auburn’s Mike Short ran in the third position behind Jon Brill for much of the race, but finally snuck by for second in the closing laps. Brill ran the best race of his season and claimed third, while Larry Emerson and rookie Nick Hoyt completed the top five.
Kevin Oliver, Ryan Hewins, Travis Adams and Calvin Rose Jr. were also feature winners at the 3/8-mile oval.
Tripp built a big lead in the first 40 laps. He drove past Brill at lap 13 and set sail, while Short tried to break free from traffic. At lap 48, Mike St. Germain made contact with Tripp on the front stretch and sent him spinning into the infield.
Fortunately, damage from the collision was minor, and on the ensuing restart he got a jump on Brill. From there, it was smooth sailing for this multi-time winner.
Short commented in Victory Lane how he thought Tripp owed somebody a big thank you for this one.
“Last week, Mike (Short) said Nick Hoyt helped me win, and I guess this week Mike St. Germain helped me win. It’s just an ongoing thing with us.”
Finishing sixth through 10th were Jim Dugay, B.J. Chapman, Zach Emerson, Mack Hannon Jr. and Sumner Sessions. Eleven of the 18 starters finished on the lead lap, while only one caution (lap 49) slowed the pace. Tripp’s margin of victory was just over a second, with 17 cars were running at the finish.
In earlier feature action, Oliver inherited the Sport Truck division victory when Brad Corson was disqualified after failing post-race technical inspection. Corey Williams wound up second, while Jeremy Wagner was third. Jeff Schmidt and John Lizotte completed the top five.
Hewins recorded his second victory of the season in a wild, caution-free affair for the Runnin’ Rebel division. The Leeds-based driver took the lead from Derek Cook on lap 11 and built a sizable lead en route to the win. Cook held off a hard-charging Scott Farrington in the closing laps for second, while Troy Jordan and Jeff Hebert rounded out the top five.
Adams gained ground toward his goal of a fourth straight and fifth overall Late Model championship with his fourth victory of the season. The defending title holder from Canton started 14th on the 18-car grid, passed Gary Chiasson on lap 29 and was never challenged. Donnie Wentworth followed Adams up through the field and finished a distant second, while Tommy Ricker was third. Wentworth and Ricker have been the hotshoes in recent weeks until Adams regained his usual form. Timmy Brackett was fast once he broke free from traffic and came home fourth, while Chiasson hung on for fifth. Only one caution slowed the pace, brought out when Gerald Parlin spun in Turn 4.
“I want to thank my crew for this one,” Adams said. “Last week, the guy in charge of my setups decided he wanted to try something different. That happens to be me, so obviously I didn’t make a very smart decision. We put it back to square one for tonight, it came right back, so we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Rose earned his first career victory in the Mini Stock division with an impressive performance. The rookie from Turner took the lead from Ken Daigle on lap 11 and survived a tense restart for top honors. Justin Karkos, the hottest driver in the division, made a strong late charge, but settled for second. Fellow Turner resident Butch Keene finished third, while Jake Burns and Kevin Bishop completed the top five.
“We’ve had a few bad weeks in a row,” Rose said. “We finally got the car going well again. I was getting pretty nervous at the end with Justin all over my bumper, but we held him off.”
