RANGELEY — Peter Mehegan, a former Boston co-anchor known for his feature, “On the Road Again,” is the keynote speaker Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society’s annual program at 7 p.m. at Rangeley Lakes Regional School.

Mehegan, who worked for Boston’s WCVB-TV “Chronicle” news magazine, is a familiar figure and regular visitor to the Rangeley area. He has filmed segments for “Chronicle” in the area and after his retirement spends time here fishing for trout and salmon.

He is an active supporter of the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society’s Outdoor Sporting Heritage Museum and is currently preparing a video for the museum.

Drawing upon historical material and his “On the Road Again” programs, the video will provide a historical view of the evolution of outdoor sporting in Rangeley. For the Wednesday program he will show clips from his previous programs and discuss his experiences as co-anchor of “Chronicle” and his affection for Maine and Rangeley.

For the best-known Chronicle feature, “On the Road Again,” Mehegan traveled the back roads of Maine in his restored 1969 Chevrolet Impala for nearly two decades. He is well known for profiling colorful rural personalities, New England folks rarely seen on television: lobstermen, loggers, farmers, “anyone with a story to tell.” He produced upward of 75 half-hour programs in Maine, traveling from Kittery to Fort Kent and Rangeley to Eastport.

“Anyone who tells you Maine people aren’t friendly doesn’t know Maine,” Mehegan would say. “I was welcomed everywhere I went.”

Mehegan will travel to Rangeley for the Wednesday program in his trademark 1969 Chevy that may be seen in the school parking lot.

Once again, the Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsmen’s Association will hold their annual silent auction after the program, which will offer ice cream at no charge.
