LEWISTON — City and Bates College officials will combine efforts Aug. 20 for an emergency training drill.

The scenario will have as many as 100 public safety personnel clothed in hazardous materials suits working at Bates College’s Underhill Arena. The training, based on a release of ammonia at the ice arena, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

It’s designed to test response capabilities of fire, police, hazardous material, evidence collection teams, public works employees, 911 Communications Center staff, the Androscoggin County Unified Emergency Management Agency and Bates College. It also fulfills qualification requirements for Homeland Security Funding.


A number of facilities in the area will also be participating, including Russell Park Manor, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, D’Youville Pavilion, Central Maine Medical Center and United Ambulance.
