The Asteroidz, an ASA 16u "A" girls softball team, based out of Jay (also with girls from Bethel, Sabattus, and Farmington) attended the 16u Eastern National Tournament in Salisbury, MD. The tourney was held July 28 through August 2nd, 2009. As the only team representing Maine, and the Maine State Champs, the girls played well, finishing with a 3-3 record and defeating the New York State Champs in one game. The Asteroidz finished 29th overall, out of 64 teams from all over the region, including teams from at least eight different states. Opening ceremonies were held July 28, and the girls were able to join all the other teams for pin trading, karaoke and "moon bounce" fun. Pool play to determine seeding for the tourney, was held on July 29 and the actual tourney began on July 30. In between games, the girls were able to enjoy hunting for Maryland crabs on the Choptank River, visiting local malls, and walking the boardwalk at Ocean City. The Asteroidz would love to thank all those who helped with fundraising including local businesses in Jay, Sabattus and Bethel. his tournament is one they will not soon forget.
