Phyllis M. Shapiro
1923 – 2009
LEWISTON — Phyllis M. Shapiro, 86, of Montello Heights, 550 College St., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 20, at her residence after a long illness.
She was born in Auburn, Aug. 6, 1923, the daughter of the late Max and Annie Miller.
She was educated in the Auburn public schools, attended the University of Michigan and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Bates College. She earned a master of education degree from the University of Maine, and taught French for many years in the Lewiston public school system and Bliss College.
She was married on Dec. 28, 1942, to Harold Shapiro, who predeceased her on Oct 11, 1993. In 1995, she relocated to Montello Heights assisted living facility, where she enjoyed a warm community of contemporaries.
She was a member of Beth Abraham Synagogue and Beth Abraham Sisterhood. She enjoyed socializing with family and friends, traveling, bridge, reading and movies. She will be remembered as a woman whose smiling presence warmed all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Max Shapiro of Newton, Mass., and James Shapiro of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; her brother, Herbert Miller and sister-in-law, Jo Miller, of San Francisco, Calif.; her niece, Sandra Miller and Allan Miller of Galveston, Texas; and numerous extended family.
