The Lenny Breau Tribute Concert held at Auburn’s Festival Plaza on Aug. 16 was a great success, both artistically and financially. From the very start, I was amazed at the outpouring of support from musicians, sponsors, vendors and volunteers. Everyone involved in the local music scene wanted to be involved and waived any fees. This fact alone is proof that public recognition of Breau’s genius was long overdue, a sentiment I heard repeatedly while organizing the event.
The concert went off more smoothly than I could have imagined. The artists performed wonderfully and the mood was upbeat. Surprise guests included Breau’s daughter, Emily Hughes, and guitarist extrodinaire Thom Bresh. Of course, brother Denny Breau performed beautifully and many members of the Breau family were in attendance, including Betty Cody. The silent auction and raffle raised enough funds to underwrite a scholarship and pay for a beautiful memorial plaque and all promotional expenses.
I offer my thanks to all the musicians, sound engineers, promotional vendors, food vendors, event sponsors, raffle and silent auction donors, Auburn Police and Explorers, and the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department for their support and service.
Special thanks to all the music fans and those who purchased raffle tickets and auction items. Because of their generosity, we were able to stage a memorable concert and show youngsters that with dedication and work, someone from right here in Lewiston-Auburn can be one of the very best in the world at something he loved to do.
