ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine (AP) – Maine Gov. John Baldacci has flown over Acadia National Park with its superintendent to learn more about Sunday’s tragedy in which a wave washed a group of people off the rocks and into the ocean, killing a 7-year-old girl.

Baldacci and Superintendent Sheridan Steele, along with Maine Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan, were in a helicopter to get a bird’s-eye view of the area where thousands gathered to see the crashing waves. The governor was briefed by Steele about Sunday’s tragic events, in which several others were injured.

Baldacci said after Wednesday’s flyover that with another hurricane potentially posing similar conditions, signs will be posted and warnings issued to spectators. But Baldacci says people need to use common sense when they go to see the waves.
