LEWISTON — In the lobby of the new Raymond G. Geiger Elementary School are two display cases. One shows off pictures of the school’s namesake and Farmers’ Almanac founder, Ray Geiger. The other shows off Dr. Seuss’ book, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”
A quote from the book greets students as they walk through the lobby: “Congratulations! Today is your day! You’re off to great places! You’re off and away!”
The school’s theme is “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” Principal David Bartlett said. It’s about aspirations.
The library walls are painted soft green and lilac. Other halls and rooms are yellow, aqua and orange.
“All of the colors in this building came from the book,” Bartlett said.
The quote on the library wall states: “Wherever you’ll fly you’ll be the best of the best. Wherever you’ll go you will top all the rest.”
“You’ll find bright places where Boom Bands playing,” states a quote in a hall where students enter the music classroom or the stage.
The building has two wings. One holds the gym, cafeteria, art and music rooms, and nursing office. The second holds the library and classrooms.
On the second floor of the academic wing is a common area with sitting steps. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose,” states a quote on the wall.
The idea for the school’s theme came from Bartlett and teachers, Bartlett said. The book came up while the faculty was brainstorming with the architect.
Schools themed after a book isn’t common, Bartlett said. The school had to get a license from the publisher of Dr. Seuss books. The publisher granted permission, “but we had a lot of explaining to do.”
Making aspirations the theme pleased Peter Geiger. “I love the theme,” he said Wednesday.
Geiger is the son of the school’s namesake. For 22 years his company has adopted the Montello Elementary School encouraging students to aspire. He’s also been a leader statewide in the aspirations movement.
Too often restraints are placed on children because of their age, Geiger said.
“If we can stir their imaginations, as the theme suggests, I know we will be delighted with the results.”
The new Geiger Elementary is themed after the Dr. Seuss book “Oh the Places You’ll Go.”
