WILTON — A Farmington man is dead and a Wilton man severely injured after the all-terrain vehicle they were riding collided with a loaded logging truck on routes 2 and 4 on Friday, Wilton police Chief Dennis Brown said.

Brett Lovejoy, 44, of Farmington was dead when police and Wilton firefighters arrived, Brown said.

Timothy Hastings, 48, of Wilton suffered severe injuries, Brown said, and was transported by NorthStar Emergency Medical Services ambulance to a Farmington hospital before being flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He was in critical condition Friday night, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

The driver of the logging truck,  Brian Richards, 40, of Benton, was not hurt in the accident. It occurred at about 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Route 156, Brown said.

The logging truck was heading west on U.S. Route 2 toward Rumford when the ATV crossed in front of the truck, Brown said. It was still unclear who was driving the ATV, he said.

Richards tried to avoid the collision, but the ATV continued into the truck’s path, Brown said.

The ATV was coming from the Whistlestop Trail, a railroad bed, that runs from Jay to Farmington.

Family members and friends of the victims hugged each other and cried as they arrived on the scene and police conducted their investigation.

Maine State Police reconstructed the accident, Brown said. Its Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit was also on the scene, along with the Maine Warden Service.

Wilton Police Department was assisted by Jay and Farmington police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and firefighters from Wilton and East Dixfield.

The accident closed the road for four hours, Brown said.

The accident remains under investigation, he said.
