The Sun Journal editorial cartoon published Aug. 22 was about the meanest, most slanderous of any that I have seen in recent years. It accuses the Republican Party of being saturated with racism. It implies the mind of the Republican elephant is saturated with thoughts of awarding a medal to the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr. It suggests that the party faithful see Barack Obama with a bone in his nose, as in darkest Africa of 100 years ago. It claims that Rush Limbaugh is running the Republican show (thus accusing him of being racist). It puts into the mouth of the elephant that “slavery had its merits.” Ad nauseum. Good grief.

I am not a member of the Republican Party. Actually, I belong to the Constitution Party. But the vicious slander of that cartoon should not go unanswered.

Was there not any other subject that might be lampooned at this time? How about a cartoon ridiculing the Biblical illiteracy of the majority of delegates to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America convention in Minneapolis, as illustrated by another story in the Sun Journal, also Aug. 22.

That will be the day.
