AUBURN — Carrie A. Bracker, a glass artist, has been selected to show in an all-New England mosaic exhibition at the Somerville Museum in Somerville, Mass., Sept. 10 to Oct. 31.

Although Bracker works primarily in stained, smalti, tesserae and sea glass, she also incorporates all kinds of found objects, often from a flea market or the bottom of a trash barrel, in her mosaics.

The piece she will show in Somerville, titled “Madam Bovine,” is a cow skull mosaic made of glass, handmade gold glass, ceramic and Raku tiles and fused dichroic glass – and it is a working clock.

Bracker says her inspiration comes from nature and she loves playing with colors, shapes and textures. She especially likes working with old and used items, and breathing new life into them. Another passion of hers is to experiment with old objects or items found in nature such as rocks, pebbles, wood, beach glass and rusted metal. She also makes her own tiles using fused glass.
A native of southern Arizona, Bracker has made Maine her home since July 2004. She has a studio in Auburn and also works at Maine Art Glass Studio in Lisbon Falls. She has shown her work for more than 10 years in both Maine and Arizona.

Bracker has earned two degrees, one from Northern Arizona University in business administration and one from the University of Arizona in fine arts with a major in graphic design, illustration and painting.

Samples of her artwork may be seen at www.naturesmosaics.com.

“The Art of Mosaic” exhibit is free. Saturday afternoons there will be how-to-do mosaic presentations and opportunities to watch artists as they create. There will be a public reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at the museum at 1 Westwood Road in Somerville.
