As a taxpayer in the city of Auburn, I believe that the school system’s teachers should have a contract and insurance for themselves and their families.
It is in my opinion that teachers have the most challenging of all professions. I challenge other people to call their local school and spend a few hours volunteering in a classroom, at recess or at lunch. Their eyes will be opened, their tone will change, and they might even write a letter like mine.
Having spent some time volunteering at Sherwood Heights Elementary School last year, here is what I know to be true about teachers.
Teachers are not teaching to get rich. They are teaching simply because they love helping children learn. Most teachers come in early and stay late. There is no overtime pay, or bonuses.
Teachers call to let parents know how well their children are doing or where they are struggling. They stand with the children waiting for the bus, when applying for college and when graduating to the next grade or from school. They love children unconditionally and teach them to be the best they can be.
The citizens of Auburn should be embracing their teachers, supporting them and offering them the utmost respect — respect that includes a contract and benefits for their families.
