FD open house
NORWAY — Norway Fire Chief Dennis Yates has announced a fire department open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, to celebrate the department’s 180th anniversary.
Local author and historian Peter Hammond will be on hand to talk about the department’s history. Department memorabilia, including the original hand tub, will also be on exhibit.
Joe Holden Day
OTISFIELD — The last Sunday in the month means it’s time for the Joe Holden Day annual church picnic at the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church, Rayville Road in Otisfield. The church service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, and the picnic will follow. Those attending should bring their own bag lunch and lemonade; salted peanuts, popcorn and strawberry ice cream will be provided.
The picnic is an annual event at the church in honor of Professor Joe Holden, who was the head of the Flat Earth Society. Holden is buried across from the church.
Last Sunday service
SUMNER — The West Sumner Universalist Church will hold its last Sunday service of the year on Aug. 31 with the Rev. Nancy Micoules. There will be a special luncheon and a small silent auction following the service.
Bell Hill meeting
OTISFIELD — The Bell Hill Meeting House Association will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Spurr’s Corner Church, Route 121. The agenda will include election of officers, committee appointments and a financial report. All members are urged to attend.
Bridge results
NORWAY — Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met Aug. 21 in the Fare Share Building, Main Street. Norway. A 7 1/2 table Mitchell movement was played.
Finishing first in Flight A N/S were Richard Balian and Bailey Geeslin, also first in Flight B; second, Linda Smith and Jack Neal, second in Flight B and first in Flight C; third, Pete Cummings and Dick Allen. Finishing third N/S in Flight B were Penny and Bob Thomas.
Finishing first in Flight A E/W were Larry Holmes and Eric Sahlberg; second, Paul Kahl and Nick Karamessinis; third, Suzanne Andrews and Richard Worthington, first in Flights B and C. Finishing second in Flight B E/W were Roseanne Blass and Nancy Woods, second in Flight C; third, Elaine Dresser and Sue Farnum, third in Flight C
There was an error in the movement of the boards during the play Friday, consequently, the published scores may be different than the convention sheets.

Starting in October the cost of the game will increase $1. The club will add a second game at 6:30 p.m. Mondays if there is enough interest. Also the first week in October a charity game will benefit MS.
