100 years ago, 1909

Mrs. Loius Page has received through J. N. Poliquin of Camp St. Louis Modern Woodmen of America a check for $1,000, the amount of the claim for the death of Louis Page. Mrs. Page is very grateful to the Woodmen for the prompt settlement and assures them that the money is especially welcome just at this time.

50 years ago, 1959

A new retail shoe outlet, Shoe City U.S.A., plans to open its doors for business in October at 777 Main St., Lewiston, it was announced last night by Charles Levin, Lewiston Realtor.

The new concern, with headquarters at North Miami Beach, Fla., and with 28 other outlets in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, has taken a ten year lease on the building formerly occupied by a greeting card company and will handle a complete line of family footwear.

25 years ago, 1984

Androscoggin County is hosting the Maine Counties Annual State Convention, Sept. 7-9, at the Ramada Inn, Lewiston. Emile Jacques, commissioner of Androscoggin County, is convention chairman.

Featured speakers at the convention’s opening banquet will include U.S. Senator William S. Cohen, Atty. General James E. Tierney, State Rep. Elizabeth Mitchell, and Mayor Alfred Plourde of Lewiston.

The convention will conclude with a banquet Saturday night and entertainment by Maine humorist Robert Skoglund.
