WILTON — Selectmen accepted a gift of a 1990 Sea Nymph boat from the Friends of Wilson Lake on Tuesday to provide police, fire and rescue coverage.

The boat will be used on the lake that is near the downtown area, and on Pease and Varnum ponds in Wilton.

Private boat owners have loaned their crafts to the departments in the past, said Wynn Muller, president of the lake group. Realizing the potential need for the Police Department to have a boat, the group set aside funding in its budget and found one that they could offer to the town. It needs some work, he told the board but the group also included funds in the budget to cover additional work on it for next year.

The 19½-foot aluminum boat includes a trailer and a 1990 120 horsepower Johnson motor, Muller said.

Police Chief Dennis Brown told the board he wanted members of his department to train with area game wardens for potential coverage of the lake. The boat will not be used for regular assignments. Eventually, the boat will also be available for mutual aid.

Plans include storing the boat winters at the East Wilton Fire Station. Summer storage has not been decided.
