LEWISTON —Two former city councilors, former police Chief Bill Welch and several other residents will all have a hand in selecting the next city administrator.

Human Resources Director Denis Jean said councilors, Mayor Larry
Gilbert and local organizations had made their selections for people to
serve on the committee. He spent Friday afternoon calling those people,
making sure they were willing to do the job.

Jean planned to begin sending them copies of the 41 resumes his office has received next week and expects them to begin meeting Sept. 17.

Councilors decided Thursday to give the group until Oct. 15 to select the five best candidates. Councilors are expected to hire the next administrator from that list.

“That should be plenty of time,” Jean said. “I expect they’ll have two or three meetings and they’ll make their selection.”

Each councilor was able to select one resident for the committee, and the School Department, Chamber of Commerce, Lewiston-Auburn Economic Economic Growth Council and Central Maine Medical Center were also allowed to appoint  people to the committee.

Jean said 11 of the 12 seats on the committee were filled. He did not have an appointee from CMMC by Friday, but expect that spot would be filled by Tuesday.

The group includes Welch, former Councilors Joyce Bilodeau and Stavros Mendros, Zam Zam Mohamed, Rose Willson, Craig Saddlemire, Paul Michel, Herve Gendreau, Jan Barrett, Lucien Gosselin and Tom Shannon.
