LEWISTON — The newly appointed chairwoman of the National Labor Relations Board, Wilma B. Liebman, will be the featured speaker at the Western Maine Labor Council’s third annual Labor Day Barbecue on Monday, Sept. 7. The barbecue is free and open to the public.

The event will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the IBEW 567 Union Hall at 238 Goddard Road. It is meant to celebrate Labor Day and highlight the accomplishments and contributions of workers, according to organizers.

Liebman was designated chairwoman of the NLRB by President Obama earlier this year.

The barbecue will feature live music, hamburgers and hotdogs made from locally-raised animals, fried turkey, fresh corn, ice cream and other desserts. Museum L/A will host an educational exhibit about the history of local brick makers. Children will have a “kids tent” featuring face painting, and other entertainment.

According to event organizers, speakers will address the need for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation being considered by Congress that will reform labor law. And participants will highlight the need for a single-payer, national health insurance system, as well as addressing local labor struggles.

The Western Maine Labor Council represents more than 5,500 workers.
