No disrespect to all the hard-toiling folks out there, but to mark Labor Day, let’s salute those who have had what may be the toughest job of all. Here are five memorable TV moments involving TV moms going into labor.
‘I LOVE LUCY’ (Jan. 19, 1953): The most famous TV birth in history. Ricky (Desi Arnaz), Fred (William Frawley) and Ethel (Vivian Vance) have planned and rehearsed meticulously for when Lucy (Lucille Ball) goes into labor. When the moment comes, of course, they forget everything — including Lucy.
‘MURPHY BROWN’ (May 18, 1992): In the final episode of the fourth season, unwed Murphy (Candice Bergen) goes into labor in the middle of an “FYI” broadcast. Bergen says this was her favorite episode; Vice President Dan Quayle did not hold the same opinion.
‘FRIENDS’ (Oct. 8, 1998): In the show’s 100th episode, the gang arrives at the hospital to witness Phoebe’s (Lisa Kudrow) labor. Nothing goes smoothly, starting with Phoebe’s doctor, who is obsessed with Fonzie.
‘SEX AND THE CITY’ (Feb. 10, 2002): Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Big (Chris Noth) are on a romantic date – a carriage ride through Central Park. They begin to kiss but are interrupted by a call from Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), who’s going into labor. The horses speed up and Carrie dismounts at the hospital.
‘MAD MEN’ (Oct. 18, 2007): Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) has severe stomach pains shortly after being promoted to junior copywriter. She chalks it up to bad office food, but goes to the hospital to get the pains checked out. She’s stunned when the doctor tells her she’s in labor.
