DIXFIELD — It seemed like the Dirigo football team could do no wrong in this season-opening Campbell Conference game.

Senior quarterback Nic Crutchfield threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers and also added a run-in a score as the Cougars cruised to a 74-6 win against Freeport on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon.

The tone was set early as Dirigo scored on its first five possessions and led 35-0 two minutes in to the second quarter. The points are believed to be a record for the biggest margin of victory and the most points ever scored by Dirigo at Harlow Park.

Dirigo (1-0) relied on Crutchfield (seven of nine for 236 yards, four TDs) to get each teammate involved and things went smoothly a majority of the time. The Cougars opened with a 25-yard run by Tyler Chiasson and then Crutchfield threw over the top to Spencer Ross for a 19-yard TD.

“There was no safety,”Crutchfield said. “We had spread (field) out and it brought the safety up and that left the middle wide open. We have some good receivers and the linemen held their blocks, so I just had to wait for those guys to get in the open.”

Ross rushed for a 4-yard TD and following a Freeport three and out, Crutchfield connected with scat back Bryan Blackman for a 52-yard catch and run. The ball deflected off a Falcon linebackers shoulder pad, but Blackman caught the ball in full stride and out raced the secondary.

Freeport (0-1) has been elevated from the Developmental League and faces some pretty stiff competition. The lone highlight was a 71-yard run by Miguel Beckles for a TD. Beckles had broke containment and was cutting across the grain, when the ball hit the ground, but bounced right back up in to his hands.

“We didn’t know what to expect because we had no film on them,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said. “(Assistant) David Crutchfield had found out they ran a double-wing, and I felt our defense handled it well. In a game like this, I was not worried about complacency because there’s good senior leadership out on the field with guys like Mason Cote.”

Seniors Alex Miele and Kyle Hutchinson caught TD passes of 35 and 44 yards, respectively.

The Cougar special teams made their presence known with Eric Bolduc kicking two points after (before rushing off to play a soccer game) and Tyler Chiasson kicked six PATs. Blackman returned the opening kickoff of the second half  for a 65-yard touchdown.

“(Team) had high expectations coming in to this game,” said Tyler Chiasson, who rushed for 60 yards, had an 8-yard TD and recovered a fumble. “We wanted to come out here and show people that we can hit hard. Their double-wing was different because there’s usually three linemen in the middle standing and coming forward, with the ball carrier behind and you need to shed your way through.”

Brandon Jonaitis had a 2-yard TD. Blackman and freshman Cody Chiasson each had 1-yard rushing TDs in the fourth quarter.
