100 years ago, 1909

William H. Davis of Auburn had his pocket picked late yesterday afternoon while boarding the electrics at the Fair grounds for the city. He had his roll of bills in his side pant’s pocket and had carefully held his hand on them until it came time to scramble for the cars. In taking hold of the side of the car to assist him in boarding, a clever pick-pocket deftly procured the money and got away.

50 years ago, 1959

SABATTUS — Craig H. Cheeseman of this village, who read of the 11-foot four inch sunflower raised by Adrien G. Cote of Auburn, made it known Monday that his garden here boasts a 13 foot giant.

It all started when one enterprising gardener in the local area announced that he had raised a nine foot monster. Cote then submitted his claim for the record.

Cote reportedly wondered if his flower was the tallest in the Twin City area. Cheeseman admits that it may be, but in Sabattus “they grow ’em tall!”

25 years ago, 1984

The city of Lewiston will receive an additional $217,239 in state aid this year under a new revenue-sharing program, Rep. Jim Handy, D-Lewiston, said Friday.

The additional funds are the result of the Legislature’s removal of the sales-tax exemption for cigarettes last session, combined with the $5 million set aside for property-tax relief, Handy said.
