AUBURN — Kathryn Ventrella and Erin Gats looked at each other. Both of them looked over at Annika Durrell. All of them shrugged their shoulders, and all of them started back toward the center of the field.
Finally, Ventrella turned back toward the cage to retrieve the ball.
“That’s how Kathryn is,” Livermore Falls field hockey coach Julia Parker said. “She doesn’t care who gets the goal, as long as it goes in.”
Ventrella had to retrieve the ball four times Wednesday, after each of her four goals, as she and the rest of the Andies marched out of Auburn with a 7-0 win over St. Dom’s in an early-season MVC matchup.
“We really didn’t know what to expect from them coming in,” Parker said. “We only ever played them in the playoffs until this year, and usually they have a great team. We expected a battle.”
What the Andies got was a romp.
After peppering St. Dom’s sophomore keeper Jenna Fongemie with 17 shots in the first half, Livermore Falls (3-0) walked into the break with a 2-0 lead. It could have been much bigger.
“There’s no question Jenna played an outstanding game,” St. Dom’s coach Brian Kay said. “She and our defense played a great first half, but after a while, they started to get frustrated a bit.”
Ventrella earned both goals in that first half, the first coming with 10:10 remaining on a sharp-angle shot from the left post on a rebound, and the second on a tip-in on a long crossing feed from Kathrynn Lake.
“We stayed a bit extra after practice (Tuesday), working on tips and extra passing,” Ventrella said.
The Andies’ midfield and defense didn’t allow one shot to reach goalie Caylee Morris in the opening stanza, despite a pair of penalty corners for the Saints.
In the second half, Ventrella netted her third on a goalmouth scramble on a tic-tac-toe pass and shoot from Durrell. Hannah Therrien made it 4-0 eight minutes later, and Ventrella knocked in her fourth just 40 seconds later on another tip-in.
Gats and Durrell finished the scoring for the Andies, who outshot the Saints (0-1-1) 30-2 on the afternoon.
“We don’t have pure shooters on the team, and that was more than apparent today,” Kay said.
“This was a great boost of confidence for the team,” Parker said. We know we still have to work hard going forward.”
