The Sept. 6 edition of the Sun Journal printed an article about a woman from Mansfield, Conn., who was attacked by a masked man in her home after he broke into her house with the intent to sexually assault her. Although her foot connected with the attacker’s body and he was frightened away, the man is still referred to as the alleged attacker.
Her home was broken into, she was held at knifepoint and she experienced a physical attack that probably would have ended in rape. She was in her home and she thought she was safe. What emotional and physical trauma has she experienced because her personal space was violated? Yet, the piece stated “The woman was not hurt.”
That has got to be one of the most ignorant and callous statements I have ever heard. A reporter should go to the local rape crisis center and interview as many staff as possible and learn about the repercussions of attempted rape on victims. Hopefully, that would reveal a new knowledge of the trauma of attempted rape on the emotional, mental and spiritual psyche of a victim.
