OXFORD — The “Big O” Oxford Fair will boast racing, exhibitors and rides as it begins a week of events on Sunday.

The fair will run from 9 a.m. until 10:30 or 11 p.m. Sunday through Saturday, Sept. 13 to 19. It is the second year the fair has had a full week of events.

Suzanne Grover, president of the Oxford Fair Association, said buildings on the fairgrounds have been refurbished. The fair will host new programs and entertainment, and harness racing will take place every day except Monday and Tuesday.

“We have the best track in the state,” Grover said.

Monday will feature Woodsmen’s Day events such as log rolling and tree felling. Wednesday’s events include Education Day activities. Thursday is Senior Citizens and Veterans Day at the fair, admittance for seniors and veterans is $4.

Shows at the fair will start with heavy metal and end with country. Local band Dead Season will take the stage at 9 p.m. on Sunday, and double-platinum country singer Josh Turner will close the fair with a 9:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, Sept. 19. Grover urged people interested in attending the Turner show to purchase advance tickets at the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce or etix.com.

The Oxford Idol contest will hold performances Sept. 13, 15 and 17, before a final winner is chosen on Sept. 19. Other entertainers include the Flying Pages family trapeze act and Bruce Nye the Elvis Guy, an impersonator of Elvis Presley.

“He’s going to return!” joked Grover. “He’s coming Friday night to entertain the ladies.”

Other attractions include agricultural and livestock shows, cattle pulls, bull riding, a lawnmower race and pig scrambles. C.N. Brown and the Chamber of Commerce will host a beano tent to benefit muscular dystrophy research.

Ticket prices are $10 for those 13 and older, and $5 for students 6 to 12, on Sunday, Friday and Saturday. The cost is $6 for those 13 and older, and $4 for those 6 to 12, from Monday through Thursday. Children ages 5 and under may enter for free.

Parking will cost $2 per car, and $3 per car on Sunday and Saturday. Grover said the additional proceeds on those days will go to the Boy Scouts. In addition, the fair will pay a stipend to parking volunteers during the fair to be returned to community programs through the Oxford Advent Christian Church and Moss Brook Community Church.
