LEWISTON — New Beginnings will hold its sixth annual 5K race/walk beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday Sept. 13, at the Gaslight Park. Sen. Margaret Craven will be the starter of the race.

Race coordinator Dawne Havener, of Turner, said “I am pleased with the new USA Track and Field certification. The course is slightly different than in previous years and very challenging.”

Free knit running caps or t-shirts will be given out to the first 100 registrants. Cash prizes will be given for the top male and female finishers overall; prizes will also be given for the first male and female finishers in six age categories.

New Beginnings serves runaway and homeless youth with a variety of programs including emergency shelter, transitional living, street outreach and case management. “The shelter has been very busy this year,” said Bob Rowe, executive director of New Beginnings. “We sometimes have less referrals in the summer, but not this year. The numbers of youth and families we are seeing reflects the hard times. This event is very important to us, and the youth we serve.”

Entry fee is $15. To register, visit www.newbeginmaine.org, call 795-4077 or register the day of the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. A map of the course is available at www.newbeginmaine.org.
