ROXBURY – After months of searching for a third Planning Board member, selectmen found one right under their noses at Tuesday night’s board meeting.

By a unanimous vote, Cathy Matson was appointed to replace Barry Bunten who resigned March 10. She will serve a three-year term.

At the meeting’s start, selectmen’s Chairman John Sutton added an item to the agenda to appoint Jim Theriault as a Planning Board alternate. When that topic was reached, Sutton quickly nominated Theriault, a Roxbury resident and businessman and Mexico police chief, to serve as a third planner in the alternate position. Theriault didn’t attend the meeting.

Matson, however, quickly spoke up before the board could vote and said she had left a letter containing her accomplishments as proof she could handle the work.

Sutton then read through them, rescinded his motion, and nominated Matson. After the board OK’d her appointment, Sutton then nominated Theriault to serve as an alternate.

Matson is to be sworn in before the Planning Board’s meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in the town office.

In other business, selectmen:

• Learned they must hold a public hearing before the board can vote to restrict weight on town roads, mainly by posting them for logging truck operations in the spring when the frost is leaving the ground and during prolonged rainy periods.

• Agreed to have an Oxford County Sheriff’s deputy deliver registered letters to two landowners whose property the board considers as junkyards without permits.

• Opened the lone bid of $10,000 for summer road work, then decided to determine how much the cost of labor would be and materials like culverts and cold patch to be supplied by the town.
