Excise tax bill

Issue: The board discussed a resolution opposing LD 974, which seeks to lower the state excise tax.

The scoop: The resolution states that $400,000 in revenue to Turner would be cut. That money is used yearly to maintain 70 miles of roads and three bridges.

Up next: Selectmen voted to sign the resolution, which cites grave concerns about the proposed legislation.

Restoration of Old Town House

Issue: Restoration of the Old Town Hall in Turner Center to its original construction of 1831.

The scoop: Leavitt gave the board a report of her meeting with David Rogers and Richard Lajoie regarding the plan for a full restoration of the Old Town House. Volunteers are looking
at the building, will meet again in late September to discuss the
projects that should be undertaken and in what order. Areas of focus are repairing the foundation, trusses and attic area, as well as replacing the roofing, restoring windows, doors and steps.

Up next: All work will be reviewed by the Maine
Preservation Commission before any project begins. The estimated time
frame may be five years, based on funding. Leavitt will work to gain donations
and grant awards. While the historic reserve account has been funded this year with $25,000, the project total could reach as much as
$100,000.


Fire suppression contract

Issue: The board reviewed the mutual aid contract for firefighting services between the town of Turner and the town of Hartford.

The scoop: The town of Turner, in the mutual aid contract, agrees to provide reasonable and responsible fire suppression services to Hartford from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, through volunteers and current equipment and manpower. Hartford will pay Turner $3,500 in exchange for these services.
