WORCESTER. Mass. — Laura Martel continued her torrid scoring outburst to start the season by breaking a scoreless deadlock in overtime in Maine’s 1-0  women’s soccer victory over Bryant.

Martel’s unassisted goal came at the 9:11 mark of overtime when she chipped in a shot into the right-side of the goal. Martel, of Lewiston, now has scored Maine’s last four goals over a span of three games.

Bates 3, Conn. College 1

LEWISTON — Bates College opened up the 2009 women’s soccer season with
a 3-1 NESCAC victory over Connecticut College on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Tina Tobin was the first Bobcat to score as she
took a pass from junior midfielder Meredith Poore and deposited the
goal from close range in the 12th minute of the contest.

The Bobcats found breathing room in the 82nd minute when sophomore
midfielder Lauren Dobish made a perfect pass to sophomore Sam Alper,
who then juked the ball past the goalie into the left corner of the
goal.

The Camels (0-1) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 66th minute as sophomore
forward Kate Driscoll gained control of a bouncing corner kick and
knocked the ball into the net.

Maine-Farmington 4, Maine-Machias

FARMINGTON — Laura St. John tallied two goals as the University of
Maine at Farmington took a 4-0 win over the University of Maine at
Machias in women’s soccer action Saturday.

St. John scored an unassisted goal in the opening half as the
Beavers (2-0) took a 1-0 edge into intermission, but Farmington blasted
into the second half with three goals in the first 11:55.

Alida Peake scored at close-range off a Noelle Moulton tap at 47:06
for a 2-0 lead. Beth Charles pushed the advantage to 3-0 at 55:15 and
St. John followed 1:40 later for the 4-0 win.

Goalie McKell Barnes of Durham made two saves during 58:40 of play
for the Beavers, while Crystal Johnson finished and did not need to
make a save.

Conn. College 1, Bates 0

LEWISTON — First-year forward Winslow Murdoch’s goal in the 79th minute proved to be all the scoring needed in the game as Connecticut College defeated NESCAC rival Bates College 1-0 in the men’s soccer opener for both teams on Saturday.

Murdoch beat a Bates defender and took a shot that was deflected by Bates sophomore goalie Greg Watts for an unassisted tally.

Maine-Farmington 3, Maine-Machias 1

FARMINGTON — Dillon Clark netted the game-winning goal at 66:44 as the University of Maine at Farmington dispatched the University of Maine at Machias 3-1 in men’s soccer action Saturday.

The Clippers (0-2) took a 1-0 edge on a Josh Gurwicz goal in the first half, but the Beavers (3-0) responded with the tying score 10:30 into the second half on a Ryan Pelletier goal. Sean Raph followed with an insurance marker on a dandy pass from Jake Constantine for the win.

Paul Dupre made six saves in the victory. The Beavers held a 16-12 advantage in shots.

  Field hockey

Conn. College 5, Bates 3

LEWISTON — Connecticut College scored five unanswered tallies after spotting the Bobcats a goal in the opening minute en route to a 5-3 victory over Bates College in NESCAC field hockey action Saturday.

The Bobcats (0-1) came back to within striking distance with two goals off of penalty corners in the final 10 minutes. Sophomore Jenna Dannis took a pass from Michelle Brady near the left baseline, turned and ripped a shot inside the far corner to make it 5-2. Morgan Maciewicz knocked in a rebound with six minutes remaining to close the gap to 5-3.

Bates got on the scoreboard first, as junior Sema Kazarian took a feed from Dannis and redirected it past Camel’s (1-0) goalie Kelly Brennan just 37 seconds into the game.

Maine-Farmington 4, Gordon 1

FARMINGTON — Alyssa St. Pierre of Jay scored two goals and an assist as the University of Maine at Farmington sailed to a 4-1 victory over Gordon College in field hockey action Saturday.

The Beavers (1-1) held a 2-0 lead at the break. St. Pierre set up a goal by Sara Lane just after intermission, and Ashley Wentworth finished off a long run with a blast into the back of the cage for Farmington’s fourth tally.

Goalie Felisha Taylor collected a victory in her first collegiate start for the Beavers. The freshman stopped five shots.
